Penalties for Fleeing the Scene of an Accident

The penalties for fleeing or leaving the scene of an accident in Alberta vary depending on whom or what was injured or damaged during the accident. If only property damage was sustained at time of accident and you leave the scene without providing your contact and insurance information you may have your license revoked for a period of time. If bodily harm or bodily injury was sustained you may face very heavy and expensive fines, a possible prison sentence and an extended license revocation. If the accident resulted in the death of another person you may be sentenced to an extended prison term, fines and license revocation.

Your Post-Accident Obligations

Every Alberta driver has a set of obligations following an automobile accident. You are expected to:

  • Speak to police (if applicable)
  • Exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver
  • If the vehicle was unattended or parked, you must leave your insurance and contact information

Failure to adhere to any of these laws is a crime in Alberta. Even if you have adhered to each of these requirements, it is still in your best interest to speak with a criminal defence lawyer.
